A glimmer is a magical being summoned by Illumineers in the world of Disney Lorcana. Glimmers are reimagined versions of Disney characters, brought to life from fragments of stories called "story stars" and animated with magical ink from the Great Illuminary.[1] Every card in the game represents a glimmer.
Creation
Glimmers are created when an Illumineer uses an inkcaster – a handheld magical device – to combine the light of a story star with a specific type of magical ink. The process takes place within the Great Illuminary, where a massive open book called the lorebook serves as the canvas. Once the glimmer is formed on the page, it rises off the paper as a physical, three‑dimensional being.[2]
Classifications
Glimmers are divided into three main classifications, representing how closely they resemble their original Disney source material:
Storyborn
Storyborn glimmers are exact representations of Disney characters as they appear in their original films. For example, Mickey Mouse – True Friend is a Storyborn glimmer identical to the classic cartoon character. Storyborn glimmers are the most faithful to the source material.
Dreamborn
Dreamborn glimmers are reimagined versions of Disney characters, created from the imagination of Illumineers. They depict characters in new roles, outfits, or situations never seen in the original films. Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor is a Dreamborn glimmer, inspired by the 1938 short but given new life.
Floodborn
Floodborn glimmers are characters transformed by the magical Flood – a chaotic wave of ink that was accidentally released from a hidden lorebook within the Great Illuminary. Floodborn are often more powerful than their original counterparts and feature dramatic, ink‑splattered artwork. They are typically played using the Shift keyword.
Other classifications
Some sets have introduced additional glimmer types or traits:
- Illusion – Introduced in Archazia's Island. Illusion glimmers are magical projections that vanish when targeted by an action. They have the Vanish keyword.
- Toy – Introduced in Wilds Unknown. Toy glimmers represent characters from films like Toy Story and gain bonuses when other Toy glimmers are in play.
- Detective – Introduced in Whispers in the Well. Detective glimmers work together as a team, providing card draw and synergy.
Role in gameplay
In the card game, every card a player uses is a glimmer (except for items, actions, and locations, which are spells or places). Players, as Illumineers, summon glimmers by paying ink, then send them on quests to gain Lore or use them to challenge opponents' glimmers. The ongoing story of each set follows the adventures of these glimmers as they explore the Lorcana realm.
Trivia
- The first glimmers ever revealed to the public were the six cards in the D23 Expo Collector's Set (2022), all of which were Dreamborn.
- Glimmers are sometimes called "glimmers of imagination" in promotional materials.
- A glimmer can exist in multiple forms – for example, Mickey Mouse has Storyborn, Dreamborn, and Floodborn glimmers.
