An Illumineer is a magical practitioner in the world of Disney Lorcana. Illumineers are individuals summoned from another world (implied to be Earth) to the Great Illuminary, where they learn to harness magical ink and story stars to create "glimmers" – reimagined versions of Disney characters.[1] In the game, every player takes on the role of an Illumineer.
History
The first Illumineer was the mysterious Curator, who built the Great Illuminary and trained a small group of apprentices. After the Curator and his original Illumineers vanished, the Great Illuminary lay dormant for ages. Eventually, a power deep within the structure awakened and summoned a new generation of Illumineers – the players – to continue the work of protecting and preserving Disney stories.[2]
Tools and Abilities
Illumineers use several magical tools:
- Inkcaster – A handheld device that combines magical ink with the light of a story star to create a glimmer on the pages of a lorebook. The glimmer then rises off the page as a physical being.[1]
- Lorebook – A large, open book within the Great Illuminary where glimmers are first summoned. Illumineers may also carry personal lorebooks.
- Magical Ink – A resource drawn from the Inklands and stored in the Great Illuminary’s reservoir. There are six types of ink (Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Steel), each with unique properties.[1]
- Story Stars – Fragments of Disney stories that float in the sky. Illumineers capture them and use them as the "soul" of a glimmer.
Illumineers can also collect Lore – the magical knowledge that must be preserved within the Great Illuminary – by sending their glimmers on quests.
Role in the Game
Every player of Disney Lorcana is an Illumineer. The game's mechanics reflect the lore: players build a deck of glimmer cards, use ink to summon them, and quest to gain Lore. The ongoing story of each set follows the Illumineers' adventures as they explore new regions of the Lorcana realm, confront villains like Ursula and Jafar, and repair the Great Illuminary after the accidental release of the Flood.[1]

Trivia
- The word "Illumineer" is a portmanteau of "illuminate" (to light up) and "engineer" (one who builds or designs).[3]
- Illumineers are sometimes depicted on promotional art and playmats, but never as a specific named character.
- In the game's tutorial, the player is greeted by "Mickey Mouse – True Friend," who acts as a guide for new Illumineers.[4]
