Ruby is one of the six ink colors in Disney Lorcana. It is represented by a red droplet icon. Ruby focuses on aggression, high Strength values, and mechanics that revolve around challenging opposing characters. Ruby decks typically aim to control the board by eliminating opponent’s characters through challenges while building toward a powerful late game.

Philosophy and playstyle

Ruby is the color of passion, courage, and direct action. In gameplay terms, Ruby excels at:

  • High Strength characters – Ruby characters often have above‑average Strength for their cost, allowing them to win challenges.
  • Challenger keyword – Many Ruby cards have the Challenger ability, which grants bonus Strength when challenging.
  • Direct damage – Ruby has access to actions and abilities that deal damage to opposing characters without challenging.
  • Evasive – Ruby shares the Evasive keyword with other colors (like Amethyst), making its characters difficult to block.
  • Location synergy – Some Ruby cards interact with Locations, moving characters or gaining benefits from them.

Ruby is often paired with Steel for aggressive challenge‑based decks, or with Amethyst for control strategies that combine Ruby’s removal with Amethyst’s card draw.

Signature keywords

  • Challenger – When a character with Challenger challenges another character, it gains +X Strength for that challenge. This allows Ruby characters to defeat larger opposing characters.
  • Evasive – Only characters with Evasive can challenge a character with Evasive. Ruby has several Evasive characters that are difficult to block.

Ruby in the metagame

Ruby has been a competitive color since the game’s launch. Early in The First Chapter, Ruby/Amethyst control decks dominated tournaments, using Ruby’s removal and Amethyst’s card draw to outlast opponents. Later sets introduced more aggressive Ruby builds, often paired with Steel for a challenge‑focused midrange strategy. The introduction of Locations in Into the Inklands gave Ruby new tools, as Ruby characters like Moana – Kakamora Leader can move freely between Locations to generate Lore.

Trivia

  • Ruby’s ink droplet icon is a stylized red drop with a slight glow.
  • The color’s philosophy is inspired by the element of fire and the emotion of courage.
  • Ruby is the only ink color with a direct, unconditional banish action (Dragon Fire).
