Lore descriptionGlimmers created from the imagination of Illumineers, reimagining Disney characters in new roles or settings.

Dreamborn is a classification of glimmer in Disney Lorcana. Dreamborn glimmers are reimagined versions of Disney characters, created not from their original film appearances but from the imagination and creativity of Illumineers. Unlike Storyborn (who appear exactly as in the original films) or Floodborn (transformed by the magical Flood), Dreamborn represent “what if” scenarios – characters in new roles, outfits, or situations dreamed up by the Illumineers themselves.[1]

Characteristics

Dreamborn glimmers are distinguished by:

  • Original film characters reimagined – For example, Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor is a Dreamborn version of Mickey, inspired by the 1938 short but not a direct copy.
  • Alternate roles or professions – Dreamborn cards often depict characters in jobs or settings never seen in Disney films (e.g., Stitch – Rock Star, Elsa – Snow Queen as a commanding monarch).
  • No transformation lore – Unlike Floodborn, Dreamborn are not created by a catastrophic event; they are simply conjured by Illumineers from pure imagination.
  • Often feature creative outfits – Dreamborn artwork tends to be highly original, with costumes and settings not directly borrowed from source material.

Dreamborn vs. Storyborn vs. Floodborn

Classification Origin Example
Storyborn Exactly as in original Disney films Mickey Mouse – True Friend
Dreamborn Reimagined by Illumineers Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor
Floodborn Transformed by the magical Flood Mickey Mouse – Wayward Sorcerer

Notable Dreamborn cards

The following are some of the most iconic Dreamborn cards in Lorcana:

  • Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor (The First Chapter)
  • Elsa – Snow Queen (The First Chapter)
  • Stitch – Rock Star (The First Chapter)
  • Aladdin – Heroic Outlaw (The First Chapter)
  • Captain Hook – Forceful Duelist (The First Chapter)
  • Cruella de Vil – Miserable as Usual (The First Chapter)
  • Maleficent – Monstrous Dragon (The First Chapter)
  • Robin Hood – Unrivaled Archer (The First Chapter)

Dreamborn in the story

In the lore of Lorcana, Dreamborn glimmers are the result of Illumineers using their creativity to “dream up” new versions of characters. When an Illumineer uses an inkcaster to combine a story star with magical ink, they can choose to alter the character’s appearance, role, or abilities. This freedom is what makes Dreamborn so diverse – a single character can have multiple Dreamborn cards depicting different facets of their personality or alternate lives.[2]

Gameplay significance

In terms of gameplay, Dreamborn cards are not mechanically distinct from other classifications. The classification is purely for lore and flavor. However, some cards (like Just in Time or certain effects that care about character types) may refer to “Dreamborn” specifically, though this is rare.

Trivia

  • The six cards in the D23 Expo Collector's Set were all Dreamborn, introducing the classification to the public.
  • Dreamborn cards often feature the most elaborate and creative artwork in Lorcana, as artists are not bound by film accuracy.
  • Some Dreamborn designs have later appeared as physical merchandise, such as pins and playmats.
