The Great Illuminary is the central location and a magical stronghold in the world of Disney Lorcana. A giant floating structure, it is a "repository of all stories ever told" and serves as the primary hub where Illumineers are summoned to learn the art of creating "glimmers".[1] The Great Illuminary is described as the "origin of the world of Lorcana" and is powered by magical ink collected from the realm.[2]
Description and Appearance
The Great Illuminary is a colossal, wondrous construction filled with endless marvels. Its exterior is made of bronze and gold, and its components are constantly in motion. The interior features curving hallways, numerous rooms, and a vast atrium where the central inkcasting mechanism resides. Glowing lines of color, which conduct the power of the inks, flow from room to room.[1] The structure is topped by a device that attracts and gathers colorful "story stars"—fragments of Disney stories—and transfers them to the inkcasting station below.[2]
The heart of the Great Illuminary is the inkcasting station, which consists of a massive open book called the "lorebook" and a towering mechanism. It is here that Illumineers use an "inkcaster" tool to combine magical ink with the light of story stars, creating glimmers on the pages of the lorebook.[1]
History
The Age of the Curator
Eons ago, a mysterious figure known only as the Curator built or retrofitted the Great Illuminary. His goal was to collect and reimagine stories by harnessing the power of story stars and magical ink. The Curator filled the halls with glimmers and lorebooks, calling a small group of imaginative apprentices to help him, whom he named Illumineers. Eventually, the Curator and the original Illumineers mysteriously vanished.[3]
The Summoning of New Illumineers
After the Curator's disappearance, a power deep within the Great Illuminary awakened. Its call sounded throughout the world, summoning extraordinary and creative people from an unidentified world (implied to be Earth) to become a new generation of Illumineers. These new Illumineers resume the work of the Curator, protecting the stories of Lorcana.[2]
The Rise of the Floodborn
During their exploration of the Great Illuminary, one of the new Illumineers discovered a hidden room containing a mysterious locked lorebook. By playing a few musical notes, he unwittingly opened it. This act released a chaotic wave of all six inks (Ruby, Amethyst, Amber, Sapphire, Emerald, and Steel), damaging the Great Illuminary and creating the magical "Flood" that would transform certain glimmers into more powerful Floodborn characters.[4]
Technology and Magic
The Great Illuminary is a marvel of magical engineering. Its primary functions include:
- Story Star Collection: A device at the top of the structure attracts story stars from the surrounding nebula, which are then channeled down to the inkcasting station.[2]
- Inkcasting: Illumineers use the inkcaster to combine magical ink from the realm with the light of a story star, conjuring a glimmer onto the pages of the lorebook. This glimmer then rises off the page as a physical being.[1]
- Ink Reservoir: The lower reaches of the Great Illuminary contain an immense reservoir of magical ink, which is the source of Lorcana's power.[2]
- Ink Grooves: Flowing lines and grooves throughout the building conduct the power of the inks to support the Illuminary's needs.[1]
Role in the Story
The Great Illuminary serves as the primary setting for the narrative of Disney Lorcana. It is the starting point for every Illumineer's journey. The Lore that players collect in the game is a treasure that must be preserved and protected within the Illuminary at all costs.[2] Many of the game's cards depict glimmers within its halls, and the story of each set progresses events that occur there, from the initial creation of glimmers to the accidental release of the Flood.[1]
Trivia
- A friendly version of Mickey Mouse known as "Mickey Mouse – True Friend" greets newcomers to the Great Illuminary.[1]
- A brigade of Magic Brooms serve a number of functions within the Illuminary, from sweeping and cleaning to possible military and fire control roles. They carry buckets of amethyst ink and light spheres.[2]
- The Illuminary is sometimes referred to as a "story-forge," a place where new versions of characters are literally forged from ink and imagination.[3]
