Steve Warner is the co‑creator and co‑designer of the gameplay for the Disney Lorcana trading card game.[1] He previously worked at Wizards of the Coast on Magic: The Gathering.
Biography
Steve Warner and Ryan Miller had known each other for years, both having worked at Wizards of the Coast. Warner left the company before Miller and later reconnected with him around 2020 to discuss creating a new trading card game for Disney. Warner brought the initial concept to Ravensburger, and the two were brought on as lead designers.[1]
Warner has described the design philosophy of Lorcana as focusing on accessibility and emotional connection to Disney characters, rather than the high complexity of some other TCGs.[2]
Role in Lorcana
As co‑designer, Warner worked alongside Miller to establish the core rules, ink system, and the six ink colors. He has been involved in every set release, helping to balance cards and introduce new mechanics such as Floodborn, Locations, and Resist.[1]
Trivia
- Warner has cited The Little Mermaid as one of his favorite Disney films, and he was particularly involved in designing Ursula cards.[3]
- He is known for keeping a "design diary" that documents the evolution of each set.
