Reign of Jafar is the eighth set of the Disney Lorcana trading card game. It was released by Ravensburger for prerelease in local game stores on May 30, 2025, and had a full global release on June 6, 2025.[1][2] The set features Jafar as the central villain and introduces the long-awaited debut of characters from Disney's 1942 classic Bambi.[3]

The set consists of 204 base cards, 18 of which also come in an alternate art version with a special "Inkwash Foil" treatment at Enchanted rarity.[3][4] This is the first set to include a small number of reprinted cards, as the game prepared for its first set rotation with the upcoming Fabled set.[5]

Story

After the events of Archazia's Island, a Jafar glimmer has repaired the Hexwell Crown – an artifact of immense power that previously belonged to Ursula.[5] Using his serpent staff to hypnotize the detective Basil, Jafar takes advantage of the glimmer's sleuthing skills to acquire the missing crown pieces.[6] With the Hexwell Crown reassembled, Jafar uses his new power to take over Archazia's Island, transforming it into his own sand‑filled fortress.[3]

It is now up to the Illumineers to steal back the crown and rob Jafar of his power. The struggle is depicted across many cards, with heroes rallying to reclaim the crown and villains strengthening their positions.[7]

New mechanics and features

Illusion character type

Illusion is a new character type introduced in this set. Illusion‑type cards have powerful abilities but Vanish when they are hit (banished in a challenge or by damage).[4][7] Players must plan their strategy around them carefully, deciding when to attack and when they might disappear. The Scarab item allows players to return an Illusion character card from their discard to their hand, ensuring multiple uses.[7]

Vanish keyword

The Vanish keyword is associated with Illusion characters. When a character with Vanish is banished or takes damage, it is removed from play and typically triggers a beneficial effect for its controller or a negative effect for the opponent.[4]

Dual-ink cards

Reign of Jafar continues to expand the collection of dual‑ink cards introduced in Archazia's Island.[4] Notable dual‑ink cards include Alma Madrigal (dual‑ink) and Bruno Madrigal – Singing Seer (dual‑ink).[8] These cards allow players additional flexibility when building decks, as they count as both ink colors.

Continuous art cards

The set features several continuous art cards, where multiple cards connect to form a larger panoramic image. Booster packs also contain lore cards and puzzle piece cards that combine to form two separate three‑by‑three pictures detailing the storyline.[3]

Inkwash Foil Enchanted variants

Enchanted cards in Reign of Jafar feature a new "Inkwash Foil" treatment and employ a surrealistic style that places the original cards in a desert environment, reflecting Jafar's transformation of Archazia's Island.[3] There are 18 Enchanted‑rarity cards in the set, some selling for more than $200 each.[4]

Bambi (first appearance)

After months of anticipation, Bambi finally makes its Lorcana debut in Reign of Jafar. The little deer is the titular protagonist of Walt Disney Studios' fifth animated feature film (1942).[3] His introduction depicts him via two Storyborn Amethyst cards:

  • Bambi – Little Prince – a young fawn (Legendary/Enchanted)
  • Bambi – Prince of the Forest – the regal stag he grows into at the end of the story[3]

Also included are cards for Thumper and Flower.[1]

Encanto

The Madrigal family features prominently, with cards including Pepa Madrigal, Antonio Madrigal, Bruno Madrigal – Singing Seer (dual‑ink), Alma Madrigal (dual‑ink), and others.[8][9]

Aladdin

Given the storyline, a majority of the cards come from Agrabah, the setting of 1992's Aladdin. This includes:

  • Aladdin – Vigilant Guard (dual‑ink Dreamborn)[3]
  • Jasmine – Resourceful Infiltrator and Jasmine – Steady Strategist[3]
  • Jafar – High Sultan of Lorcana – the triumphant villain of the piece[3]
  • Iago – Mimicking Macaw

Reign of Jafar was available in the following product formats:

  • Booster packs – 12 random cards per pack (including one foil). Booster boxes contain 24 packs, and cases contain 4 boxes.[4]
  • Booster boxes – 24 booster packs.[10]
  • Illumineer's Trove – Includes 1 storage box, 6 card dividers, 8 booster packs, 6 damage‑counter dice, and 1 lore counter.[10]
  • Starter decks – Two single‑player decks (Amber/Amethyst and Ruby/Steel), each containing 60 cards (including 2 foil cards), 11 damage tokens, 1 rulebook, and 1 booster pack.[11]
  • Illumineer's Quest: Palace Heist – A cooperative boxed set (see below).[10]

Illumineer's Quest: Palace Heist

Palace Heist is the second Illumineer's Quest product, following Deep Trouble from Ursula's Return. It is a cooperative format that can be played solo or with two players teaming up to defeat Jafar.[5][12]

Gameplay

To win the Palace Heist, players must steal the Hexwell Crown by eliminating various Location cards and successfully reach 20 Lore per player. Jafar wins if he reaches 40 Lore, with the caveat that he cannot lose if he has the Hexwell Crown in his possession.[5] Jafar's deck operates automatically, with pressure put on players to eliminate his glimmer cards before they collect too much Lore per turn.[5]

The set includes special rules and pieces that let players change the difficulty.[12]

Contents

The Palace Heist boxed set includes:[12][5]

  • 1 Jafar scenario deck (50 cards) with storage box
  • 2 player decks (60 cards each) with storage boxes
  • 1 oversized Jafar card
  • 1 Reforged Crown tile
  • 1 Palace Heist playmat
  • 4 battlegrounds
  • 1 Jafar draw token
  • 5 lore tracker tokens
  • 29 damage counters
  • 1 Victory Card
  • Palace Heist rules sheet

Reception

Critics praised Palace Heist as much better balanced than the Deep Trouble Illumineer's Quest released the previous year, with upgraded components (a play board instead of a flimsy paper foldout, and cardboard damage and Lore counters instead of punched‑out paper pieces).[5]

Starter decks

Two starter decks were released for Reign of Jafar, described by ComicBook.com as "two of Disney Lorcana's all‑time best" and "some of the strongest in the game to date."[8]

Amber/Amethyst – A Harmonious Team

This deck is built around the Madrigal family (Encanto) and the singing mechanic.[5] It features Tiana, Bruno Madrigal, Pepa Madrigal, Antonio Madrigal, Alma Madrigal, and Clawhauser.[8] The deck focuses on playing characters with the Singer ability to sing Songs that gain Lore and draw cards.[7] Key strategies include:

  • Clawhauser has Bodyguard to protect low‑health characters, counts as 4 towards singing songs, and has 2 Quest.
  • Pepa Madrigal allows the player to gain 1 Lore whenever one or more of their characters sings a song.
  • Antonio Madrigal brings a 3‑cost character into the hand when singing a song.
  • Try Everything removes up to 3 damage and readies a character.
  • Bruno Madrigal – Singing Seer (dual‑ink) allows the player to draw a card for each character they have in play whenever he sings a song.
  • Alma Madrigal (dual‑ink) can ready characters once per turn when one or more of them sing a song.
  • Fantastical and Magical (9‑cost action/song) lets the player draw a card and gain 1 Lore for each character that contributed to singing it.[8]

Ruby/Steel – Brave and Brazen

This deck focuses on challenges and manipulating the field of battle, featuring Mulan, Stitch, Captain Hook, Prince John, Mushu, and others.[5][8] Key cards include:

  • Captain Hook (1‑cost) gains +2 Strength when challenging.

Reception

Reign of Jafar received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its strong narrative, beautiful artwork, and well‑constructed starter decks.

ScreenHub called it "the most action‑oriented yet, injecting the trading card game with a strong sense of narrative movement, buoyed by high stakes," and noted that "all of the elements in this set add up to a flavourful, powerful expansion that delivers great action, and pays off months of slower‑paced world building in the TCG."[7]

Nerdist described it as "a solid end cap to Disney Lorcana's second year" that "sets up the game solidly as it enters a pivotal third year," while noting that it "won't make any significant waves in current Lorcana play."[5]

The starter decks were singled out for particular praise. ComicBook.com rated them 5 out of 5, stating they were "some of the strongest in the game to date" and "will not be leaving my Lorcana rotation anytime soon."[8]

The Palace Heist cooperative mode was praised as "much better balanced than the Deep Trouble Illumineer's Quest released last year."[5]
