Inkable is a property of cards in Disney Lorcana that determines whether they can be used as a resource (ink) or must be played or discarded. Every card in the game is either Inkable or Uninkable. The Inkable status is indicated by a small droplet icon in the upper left corner of the card, near the Ink cost. An Inkable card has a hollow (empty) droplet; an Uninkable card has a solid (filled) droplet.

Rules

During a player’s main phase, they may place one card from their hand face down into their Inkwell. This is called “inking.” The card becomes an ink resource for the rest of the game and cannot be used for any other purpose.

Only Inkable cards may be placed into the Inkwell. Uninkable cards cannot be inked; they must either be played (if you have enough ink available) or discarded (e.g., at the end of your turn if you have more than 7 cards).[1]

Visual indicator

The Inkable status is shown by the droplet icon next to the Ink cost:

  • Hollow (empty) droplet = Inkable – may be placed into the Inkwell.
  • Solid (filled) droplet = Uninkable – may not be placed into the Inkwell.

Strategy

Inkable status is a key consideration in deck building and gameplay:

  • Decks typically include a majority of Inkable cards to ensure a steady flow of resources. Running too many Uninkable cards can lead to “ink screw” – not having enough ink to play your spells.
  • Powerful cards are often Uninkable as a balancing mechanic. A player must decide whether to include a strong Uninkable card knowing it can never become a resource.
  • During a game, players must choose which Inkable cards to sacrifice as ink, weighing the long‑term value of the card against the immediate need for more ink.

Inkable vs. Uninkable by rarity

While not a strict rule, higher rarity cards (Rare, Super Rare, Legendary, Enchanted) are more likely to be Uninkable than Common or Uncommon cards. However, there are many exceptions.

Notable Inkable cards

Card name Set Rarity Notes
Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor The First Chapter Legendary Inkable despite being a powerful Legendary card.
Be Prepared The First Chapter Super Rare (Action) Inkable board wipe.
Let It Go The First Chapter Uncommon (Action) Inkable removal spell.

Notable Uninkable cards

Card name Set Rarity Notes
Ursula – Deceiver of All The First Chapter Legendary Uninkable powerful control card.
Elsa – Spirit of Winter Rise of the Floodborn Legendary Uninkable high‑impact character.
A Whole New World The First Chapter Legendary (Song) Uninkable mass card draw.

Trivia

  • The Inkable droplet icon was designed to be intuitive: an empty droplet means “you can put ink here” (the card becomes ink), while a full droplet means “already full” (cannot add more ink).[2]
  • Some early promotional cards (like the D23 2022 Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor) do not display the droplet icon because they were printed before the final template was finalized. Those cards are considered Inkable by official ruling.[1]
