The Curator is a mysterious figure in the lore of Disney Lorcana. According to the game's backstory, the Curator built or retrofitted the Great Illuminary – the floating repository of all stories – and was the first Illumineer. He is credited with creating the first glimmers and training the original Illumineers. At some point, the Curator and his original apprentices mysteriously vanished, leaving the Great Illuminary dormant for ages until a new generation of Illumineers was summoned.[1]
Role in the Story
The Curator is described as a solitary, enigmatic being who discovered or created the magical ink and story stars that power the Lorcana realm. He built the Great Illuminary as a "story‑forge" to collect and reimagine Disney stories. Inside, he created a brigade of Magic Brooms to serve the facility and began summoning glimmers from story stars using an early version of the inkcaster.[1]
Seeking help, he called a small group of imaginative apprentices from an unknown world and named them Illumineers. Together, they filled the Great Illuminary with lorebooks and glimmers. For unknown reasons, the Curator eventually departed, and the original Illumineers vanished with him. Some cards hint that the Curator may have left behind warnings or hidden chambers within the Illuminary.[1]
Legacy
Although the Curator is no longer present, his influence permeates Lorcana. The Great Illuminary still functions according to his designs, and the new Illumineers who are summoned to the realm continue his work of protecting and preserving stories. Certain locations, such as the hidden room where the Flood was accidentally released, are believed to have been sealed by the Curator.[1]
Some fans speculate that the Curator may return in a future set, but Ravensburger has not confirmed any plans.
Trivia
- The Curator has never been depicted on a card as of Wilds Unknown (Set 12).
- His name and role are reminiscent of the "Curator" figure in other Disney‑related media, such as the Disneyland attraction "The Haunted Mansion."
- The Curator's signature color in concept art is often a deep, muted gold.
