Rise of the Floodborn is the second set of the Disney Lorcana trading card game. It was released by Ravensburger on November 17, 2023 for local game stores, and on December 1, 2023 for mass retail.[1] The set introduces the Floodborn character type and the Resist keyword, continuing the story after the events of The First Chapter.

The set consists of 204 cards, including foil versions of every card. Unlike The First Chapter, Rise of the Floodborn does not have Enchanted variants; instead, it features 6 Enchanted cards (reduced from 12).[2]

Story

Following the events of The First Chapter, a massive wave of magical ink – called the "Flood" – sweeps across the world of Lorcana, transforming many Storyborn characters into new, more powerful forms known as Floodborn. These Floodborn characters possess altered abilities, appearances, and sometimes darker personalities. Illumineers must learn to harness this new power while facing the rising threat of Ursula, who seeks to control the Flood for her own purposes.

New mechanics

Floodborn

Floodborn is a new character subtype representing characters transformed by the ink Flood. Floodborn cards are primarily played via the Shift keyword, allowing them to be played on top of a matching Storyborn character for a reduced cost.

Resist

Resist is a new keyword that reduces damage taken by a character. For example, "Resist +1" means the character takes 1 less damage from any source. Resist stacks with multiple instances.

Shift

Shift returns from The First Chapter but appears on many more Floodborn cards in this set. Shift costs are typically 2–4 ink less than the normal play cost.

Products

Rise of the Floodborn was available in the following product formats:

  • Booster packs – 12 random cards, including one foil.
  • Booster boxes – 24 packs.
  • Starter decks – Two decks (Amber/Sapphire and Emerald/Steel).[3]
  • Illumineer's Trove – 8 packs, two deck boxes, player's guide, storage box.
  • Disney100 Collector's Set – A special box celebrating Disney's 100th anniversary, containing 6 booster packs and 6 foil promo cards (one per Ink color).[4]

Notably, Rise of the Floodborn did not include a Gift Set product.

Starter decks

Two starter decks were released with this set:

  • Amber/Sapphire – Focuses on healing and resource ramp.
  • Emerald/Steel – Focuses on disruption and resilient characters.[3]

Notable cards

  • Mickey Mouse – Wayward Sorcerer (Floodborn, Shift from Mickey Mouse – True Friend)
  • Belle – Strange but Special (Floodborn, Shift from Belle – Inventive Engineer)
  • Ursula – Deceiver of All (Legendary Villain)
  • Cinderella – Stouthearted (Resist keyword)
  • Stitch – Carefree Surfer (Floodborn)

Reception

Rise of the Floodborn was well received, with critics praising the introduction of Floodborn as a flavorful and strategic addition. However, some players noted that the set had fewer high-impact cards than The First Chapter, making it slightly less essential for competitive play.[5]

Trivia

  • This is the first set to reduce Enchanted cards from 12 to 6 (a pattern that continues in all subsequent sets).
  • The set introduced the first dual‑Ink cards? (No – that came later in Archazia's Island; correction: no dual‑ink in this set.)
  • The Floodborn concept was hinted at in The First Chapter through flavor text on cards like Floodborn Magic.
