Ravensburger AG is a German toy, puzzle, and game company, best known for its jigsaw puzzles and board games. In 2023, they entered the trading card game market with the release of Disney Lorcana, a collaboration with The Walt Disney Company. The company was founded in 1883 and remains a family-owned business.
History
Ravensburger was founded by Otto Robert Maier in Ravensburg, Germany. The company began as a publisher of instructional guides for craftsmen and architects. The first board game, Journey Around the World, was released in 1884.
In 1964, the company began producing jigsaw puzzles, which would become one of their most iconic product lines. Ravensburger has held world records for the largest commercial puzzle, with "Memorable Disney Moments" and "Making Mickey Magic" each containing 40,320 pieces.
In 2015, Ravensburger acquired the Swedish toy train company BRIO, and in 2017, they purchased American game company Wonder Forge.
Relationship with Disney
Ravensburger has had a long-standing relationship with The Walt Disney Company, producing board games based on Disney properties for decades. Their most successful Disney collaboration prior to Lorcana was Villainous, a board game where players take on the roles of Disney villains.
In 2023, Ravensburger released Disney Lorcana, a trading card game featuring Disney characters. The project was described by Ravensburger North America CEO Filip Francke as "probably the largest investment that we have ever done into any type of project and initiative."[1]
Ravensburger and Lorcana
Ravensburger is the publisher and manufacturer of Disney Lorcana, handling card printing, product distribution, and organized play events. The game was developed by Ryan Miller and Steve Warner, both former Wizards of the Coast employees.
The success of Lorcana marked a significant milestone for the company, being their first entry into the trading card game market.
