This '''Manual of Style''' is a guide for editing the Lorcana Wiki. This article contains standards for producing articles that share spelling, grammar, and formatting with the other articles on the wiki. By following these rules, articles and the wiki at large become more readable and consistent.

Lorcana Wiki takes the [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style|Wikipedia Manual of Style]] as a starting point, with the following additions.

== American English ==
American English is preferred. Disney Lorcana game materials are typically written in American English first, and matching that standard enables smooth transitions between article text and quoted game materials. The one exception is that [[Wikipedia:MOS:LQ|logical quotation]] should be used, and not the quotation style typical of American print.

== References ==
* All articles should be referenced where possible.
* For lore articles, the original source (e.g., card flavor text, official Ravensburger announcements) suffices.
* Articles about tournament formats or strategy should present non‑self‑referential sources to account for their viability.

== Lorcana products ==
Card names should always be linked using the appropriate template (e.g.,
<nowiki>{{Card|Mickey Mouse - Brave Little Tailor}}</nowiki>
). Do not italicize or otherwise emphasize card names. If a card has multiple printings (e.g., different sets or promo versions), link to a specific printing when relevant. For example, use
<nowiki>{{Card|Mickey Mouse - Brave Little Tailor|TFC}}</nowiki>
(where
TFC
is the set abbreviation) rather than the generic name alone.

''Disney Lorcana'', ''Lorcana'', and other [[Ravensburger]] product names should be italicized. This includes individual card sets, special products (e.g., ''Illumineer’s Quest: Deep Trouble''), and official publications (e.g., rulebooks, art books).

* ''[[The First Chapter]]'', italicized, refers to the card set.
* [[The First Chapter (set)|The First Chapter]] (without italics) is not used – sets are always italicized.
* [[Starter deck]]s and [[gift set]]s are product types, not proper names, so they are not italicized unless referring to a specific named product (e.g., ''Mickey Mouse Starter Deck'').

=== ''Lorcana'' itself ===
Lorcana Wiki is an encyclopedia that exists to cover topics related to ''Disney Lorcana''. It is often unnecessary to name the game on an article page, and it is also uncommon to need to ''link'' the name of the game. Linking ''Lorcana'' is most appropriate in articles in the [[Portal:Products|Products]] or [[Portal:Community|Community]] subject areas.

Consider [[Wikipedia:MOS:OVERLINK]] when linking: will adding the link contribute to a typical reader’s understanding of the current subject?

== Article naming ==
=== Nouns ===
Article names use the singular form of nouns by default. Names of affiliations (e.g., “The Illumineers”) can be exceptions.

=== Capitalization ===
Article names and section headings use sentence case, rather than title case. Except for proper nouns (character names, set names, ability keywords), only the first letter should be capitalized.

=== Names of fictional characters ===
The main article for a fictional character should use the name by which that character is best known (e.g., “Mickey Mouse”, “Elsa”). Titles, honorifics, epithets, or descriptors (e.g., “Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor”) should not be used as the article name unless they help disambiguate between multiple cards or versions. Redirects should be created from other names by which readers are likely to search (e.g., “Brave Little Tailor” → “Mickey Mouse - Brave Little Tailor”).

=== Set / product name collisions ===
If a set shares its name with a location or mechanic (e.g., “Ursula’s Return” is both a set and a story event), the article named
Shared Name
should describe the set. The article for the other concept should be named
Shared Name (event)
or similar. The set article should link to the other article using [[Template:About]], but not vice versa (see [[Lorcana Wiki:Disambiguation|Disambiguation]]).

== Name changes ==
Ravensburger or Disney may sometimes change the names of lore elements or products. In general, the most recent name should be used.

=== External name changes ===
If a name change is not explained within the lore (e.g., a product renaming), the new name should be used throughout the wiki. The sole exception is within the article for the subject, to document the change itself.

=== In‑universe name changes ===
If a name change is explained within the lore (e.g., a location renamed in a later set), use older names as appropriate when covering historical topics. For example, if a future set renames “The Inklands” to something else, older articles about past events should retain the original name.

=== Real people ===
Articles covering real people (e.g., game designers, artists) should consider the [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons|real world privacy interests]] of those subjects. In particular, adhere to [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:DEADNAME|Wikipedia:DEADNAME]]. '''Do not [[Wikipedia:Deadnaming|deadname]], [[Wikipedia:Misgendering|misgender]], or [[Wikipedia:Outing|out]] [[Wikipedia:Transgender|transgender]] or [[Wikipedia:Non-binary|non-binary]] persons.'''

== Game terms ==
Lorcana rules text has a specific grammar, particularly regarding capitalization. Game mechanics articles should align with examples set by the official [[Comprehensive Rules]] (when available), card texts, and other Ravensburger publications.

=== Types and subtypes ===
[[Card type]]s (Character, Item, Action, Location) are not capitalized unless they begin a sentence. The same applies to [[keyword]]s (e.g., “evasive”, “rush”, “ward”).

Some [[subtype]]s are proper nouns (e.g., “Floodborn”, “Dreamborn”, “Storyborn”) and should be capitalized regardless of context. Other subtype names (e.g., “hero”, “villain”, “princess”) are common nouns and should be capitalized only when describing the game mechanic.

* Game mechanic context:
** ''Mickey Mouse – Brave Little Tailor'' is a '''Hero''' character.
** The '''Floodborn''' keyword allows shifting.
* Other contexts:
** In Disney films, Mickey Mouse is a hero (not capitalized).
** Many fairy tales feature a princess (not capitalized).

=== Abilities ===
[[Keyword]]s (e.g., evasive, rush, ward, resist) are not italicized and follow sentence case. If a keyword consists of multiple words (e.g., “Sing Together”), it still follows sentence case (only the first word capitalized, unless a proper noun appears).

[[Ability word]]s (if any are introduced in the future) should be italicized in the main text of an article, as they are on cards.

=== Ink colors ===
The six ink colors – Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, Steel – are proper nouns and should always be capitalized.

=== Formats ===
The names of official tournament formats (e.g., “Standard”, “Core Constructed”) are capitalized. Unofficial fan formats (e.g., “pauper Lorcana”) are not capitalized unless they become official.

== Card tags ==
{{see|Help:Card tags}} (to be created)
In most cases, the text of a card tag should match the exact name of the card, including capitalization and punctuation. Use the standard template
<nowiki>{{Card|Card Name}}</nowiki>
or the more specific
<nowiki>{{Glimmer|Card Name|set}}</nowiki>
if available.

== Deck tags ==
{{see|Help:Deck tags}} (to be created)
Within deck tags, add the appropriate card types as sections (e.g., Characters, Items, Actions, Locations) and alphabetize cards within their section. The sideboard – if existent – should be the last section of the deck.

== Uploading images ==
* If you upload an image, you must either have the rights holder’s permission or the image must qualify under the [[:Template:Fairuse|fair use criteria]].
* Images should be Lorcana‑related (card art, product photos, event pictures) or Disney‑adjacent when relevant.
* Images owned by Ravensburger or Disney should be marked with
<nowiki>{{Ravensburger}}</nowiki>
or
<nowiki>{{Disney}}</nowiki>
(create these templates as needed).
* Explicit material is prohibited.
* Self‑promotional material (e.g., watermarked personal photos) is generally not allowed, with very minor exceptions (e.g., a photo you personally took of a tournament venue, if not otherwise copyrighted).

Please be aware that the image cache sometimes updates slowly. If you need to upload multiple versions of the same image, wait a minute between uploads.
